I noticed something funny at the gym the other day. {Yes, I am still a member and haven’t quit yet} There were several people who made me laugh out loud. (Which, apparently, was a nice break from me singing out loud at the gym). There were people who looked as though they were attending. They had their headphones on, their water bottles in hand, muscle shirts on {although some had no muscles} but they were literally doing nothing.

They were playing on their phones, looking at the tv and one was literally reading a book. Interesting… they were ATTENDING the gym. They have a membership, they have the correct attire on, but they were merely at the gym as an “attending” member, if you will.

This got me to thinking… is this what people do at CHURCH? Do they merely attend? Do you get up and put your (church) face on, fancy clothes and grab your Bible? Do you walk into church with a perfect smile on, greet people, and then merely fade into attendance?

We go to the gym to see results. {If you know of any other reason to go to the gym, please let me know} We go to the gym to lose weight, tone up, get rid of fat, feel better ourselves, look better, heal our muscles after an injury or surgery… whatever the reason may be, we go to see/experience RESULTS!

Isn’t that why we should be going to church? If the only reason to go to church is to “check it off” your list or to have an excuse to wear a new outfit… shouldn’t you just stay home in your pjs? We should be going to church to see and experience RESULTS! We should go to be filled, to fill others, to be in community with God’s children, to learn something, to gain insight, to feel motivated to live a more Godly life.

Side bar– sometimes we don’t feel like going to church, but we go anyway. THAT IS OK! Sometimes we don’t feel like going to the gym, but we go anyway. I am not saying you shouldn’t go to the gym or church if you aren’t “feelin’ it”.

Don’t simply attend a church. Be involved. Be engaged. Be a PART of it. Make a difference. Help out. Open the doors. Pass out bulletins. Rock a baby. Pray for your pastor. Offer to make coffee. Dump the trash. Sing a song. Whatever it is that God has placed on your heart as your spiritual gift, USE IT!

And furthermore… if you pay for the gym…GO! But don’t go and read a book. That’s just dumb.

As each has received a gift, use it to serve one another, as good stewards of God’s varied grace: whoever speaks, as one who speaks oracles of God; whoever serves, as one who serves by the strength that God supplies—in order that in everything God may be glorified through Jesus Christ. To him belong glory and dominion forever and ever. Amen.- 1 Peter 4:10-11

For now,
